First Responders

First responders. Ready. Willing. Equipped. When we call, they come. No hesitation. No reservations. Unsung heroes right in our own backyard.

Concerned citizens from every walk of life serve as "first responders" to unborn babies. People just like you. You're the reason why Right to Life of Michigan is a leader in reducing the number of abortions performed. However, we have an emergency situation on our hands that demands our immediate attention.

When the governor unexpectedly vetoed the bill that would have prevented abortion coverage from becoming a "basic benefit" in future Michigan health insurance policies, we were surprised, confused and dismayed.

But we were not discouraged!

Thankfully, the Michigan Constitution allows concerned citizens to initiate legislation. This is an option that we have exercised on three different occasions in the past to protect the unborn child. In the process, we have set numerous state records.

  • Public Act 59 of 1987, enacted via a citizen-initiated petition, ended Medicaid funding of abortion in Michigan.

  • Michigan's parental consent for abortion law (PA 211 of 1990) was enacted via a citizen-initiated petition.

  • The override of Governor Jennifer Granholm's veto of the Legal Birth Definition Act in 2004 to end partial-birth abortion was also enacted via a citizen-initiated petition.

Once again using the provision in the Michigan Constitution which allows citizens to directly introduce a bill from the collection of signatures, we have officially launched a special committee: NO Taxes for Abortion Insurance.

After enough signatures are collected and certified, the new bill will be presented to the Michigan House and Senate for a vote. Our goal is to collect 350,000 certified signatures by late September. Upon passage, this citizens' bill will become law without the governor's signature and without going on the ballot.

Those companies or individuals purchasing health insurance who want coverage for abortion will have to purchase a separate rider. Those of us who oppose abortion will not be forced to subsidize abortion with our health insurance premiums.

Throughout the summer months, first responders will take their stand at churches, community events, state fairs and some will even go door-to-door to gather the needed signatures. This is yet another excellent opportunity for us to reinforce the value of every human life and to make it clear that we are not going to pay for someone else's abortion.

But we are running out of time. The Affordable Care Act is scheduled to take full effect on January 1, 2014. We need our legislators to address this legislation by early fall. If we don't act today, you and I will be forced to pay for the destruction of innocent babies.

That's why I am turning to you in this emergency situation. You are a first responder. You are the first line of defense for the unborn. As a matter of fact, you are the only line of defense!

Here's how you can help:

  • If you are a registered voter, please order and sign a petition right away. Before doing so, take a minute to carefully read all of the instructions. We want to make sure the state doesn't invalidate the signatures you've taken the time to collect.

  • Once you sign, please encourage your family, neighbors, friends and fellow parishioners to join you with their signature. You may even be willing to join other first responders in going door-to-door. Before returning your petition(s), please make sure you fill out the "circulator" section in the bottom right-hand corner.

  • Do not hold petitions! They go through an extensive review process before we submit the signatures. Even if you intend to collect additional signatures, but not right away, put the petition(s) you have in the mail as soon as possible, even if they are not full. Place your order for more petitions right under your return address.

  • Please visit the NO Taxes for Abortion Insurance website at www.michigansvoice.com for all the details. Additional petitions, support materials, and a wide variety of background information are right at your fingertips.

When we crafted our 2013 budget, we didn't anticipate the governor's veto and the need for this petition drive. This effort and all related expenses are "above and beyond" the already hectic schedule of events that we had planned for this year. For this reason, I need your most generous contribution possible.

I need my first responders today!

Abortion is no longer out of sight, out of mind. Abortion has now become very personal for each and every one of us! Let our message resound from the rooftops:

Abortion is not health care, and we're not going to pay for it.

Thank you for being a first responder. Thank you for being a hero to the unborn child. Thank you for your willingness to rush into the battleā€”no hesitation, no reservations.
