Abortion ReportIn January of 2008, the Alan Guttmacher Institute released a report which found the number of abortions performed in the United States has continued to decrease. The report estimated there were 1.21 million abortions performed in the United States in 2005 and the U.S. abortion rate (the number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44) is at its lowest level since 1974. A previous study by the Alan Guttmacher Institute estimated there were 1.31 abortions performed in the U.S. in 2000. The recent estimate indicates an 8 percent drop nationally over the last 5 years. The report estimates the number of abortions performed in Michigan dropped by 13 percent in the same time period. The Alan Guttmacher Institute is the research arm of Planned Parenthood, America's largest abortion provider. Though abortions have decreased over the last decade, abortion is still a far too common occurrence. The recent Guttmacher report estimates 22 percent of pregnancies (not including those which ended in miscarriage) still end in abortion. |
