Promoting life one county at a timeThe Sanilac County Board of Commissioners declared January 20, 2008, as Sanctity of Human Life Sunday in Sanilac County. The Board unanimously supported a resolution mourning the January 22, 1973, U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton rulings and recognized the efforts and commitments put forth by Sanilac County Right to Life. "I was very surprised and elated," said Amy Roggenbuck, president of Sanilac County Right to Life and writer of the resolution said. On December 27, the Sanilac County Board voted 5-0 to adopt the prolife resolution after it was recommended by its Human Services Committee. Roggenbuck said that other efforts to dedicate days to social issues gave her the idea to propose the resolution to the Board. "I sat in on a meeting a year ago, and they passed a resolution honoring parenting month," she said. "I thought about that word, parenting, and I thought why can't we do something for unborn babies too?" Roggenbuck said she wanted to put her elected officials on the record about abortion. "That's part of my goal, I want to find out where my politicians stand," she said. During her presentation she used several resources, including fact sheets about consequences of abortion, the web site teenbreaks.com, and the story of Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow's mother choosing not to abort him despite possible medical complications. Roggenbuck hopes to pass a similar resolution next year. "I don't know how successful it will be because all the commissioners are up for election, but it's my duty to try and pass it again," Roggenbuck said. |
