Right to Life of Michigan

Electing Prolife Lawmakers

Just like clock work, every two years Right to Life of Michigan Political Action Committee (RLM-PAC) winds up to help elect prolife people to various positions in all levels of government. The purpose of RLM-PAC is “to endorse and support candidates for public office who have a commitment to the sanctity of human life.”

Without the success of the RLM-PAC, there would have been fewer prolife representatives throughout the years. Fewer prolife representatives means fewer prolife laws. Fewer prolife laws means more abortions and fewer children who are given a chance to live. The RLM-PAC is a necessary and successful component in the effort to protect innocent human life throughout the state of Michigan.

In order for a candidate to be endorsed, he or she must support the principles of the Human Life Amendment, correctly answer questions to a candidate questionnaire and be a credible candidate. Previous voting records, prolife leadership and information obtained through personal interviews also help in determining which candidates should be endorsed. The RLM-PAC endorses both Democrat and Republican prolife candidates.

For thirty years, the RLM-PAC has worked hard to endorse and support prolife candidates throughout the state of Michigan, and their success and experience is evident. In 2000 and 2002, RLM-PAC endorsed candidates won 80.9 percent and 84.4 percent of the time, respectively. In 2004, this trend continued as candidates endorsed by the RLM-PAC were successful 82.5 percent of the time as 222 candidates won in 269 races.

The success of prolife legislation in Michigan relies on having strong prolife majorities in both the Michigan Senate and the Michigan House. Of the 38 seats in the Michigan Senate, 23 are held by candidates who were endorsed by the RLM-PAC in 2002. Of the 110 seats in the Michigan House, 68 are held by candidates who were endorsed by the RLM-PAC in 2004. These strong majorities in both the Michigan House and Senate allow prolife laws to be passed and prevents the passage of laws that jeopardize the sanctity of human life.

Michigan’s state legislature was not always so prolife. For example, in 1982 there were only 55 members of the Michigan House who were endorsed by the RLM-PAC. Years of work by the RLM-PAC and the prolife citizens of Michigan has helped strengthen the level of commitment to life in the Michigan legislature. In addition, the RLM-PAC has encouraged prolife candidates on the local level, many of whom eventually try and succeed to move up in the political arena.
