Special Volunteer Lights Up Right to Life of Michigan Educational Resource Center
After finishing her junior year of high school, Hope, a member of the National Honor Society, was looking for a place to volunteer. At the suggestion of her mother, Hope began volunteering at Right to Life of Michigan’s Wayne County Resource Center which is close to her home. Hope is blind so she was hoping to use her time as a volunteer to make a difference for others who are visually impaired. Using a Perkins Brailler, a machine which writes braille, Hope worked on creating braille text for different brochures including a brochure on fetal development called the Brief History of You. Hope also labeled numerous brochure holders with braille and plans on helping out at upcoming outreach activities. Hope is entering her senior year at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte. Her future plans include studying psychology and journalism at a four year college before going on to study law in graduate school. “Hope is a very up‑beat, positive, intelligent and great teen. I think she is a great kid with a lot going for her and her future as an attorney,” said Chris MacDonald, manager of RLM’s Wayne County Educational Resource Center. Besides her volunteer work at Right to Life, Hope has also taken the
time to volunteer at long-term care facilities for the elderly where she’s
helped with planning activities, helping out with Bingo as well as reading
and talking to the patients. |
