Right to Life of Michigan

Sign up for prolife educational Signature Ads

As January 22, the 29th anniversary of the Supreme Court's tragic Roe v. Wade decision approaches, you may be wondering what you can do in your community to remind the public about the immense loss of human life since this catastrophic ruling. Right to Life of Michigan suggests that you use signature ads to effectively communicate your passion for life.

Signature ads can be placed in local newspapers. Signature ads usually contain a statement supporting the right to life of the unborn, a heartfelt concern for women with crisis pregnancies, and an affirmation of alternatives to abortion. These ads are called signature ads because they contain the names of people, families, and churches that agree with the prolife statement. Right to Life of Michigan has ad slicks available that can be used to enhance a signature advertisement.

When planning a signature ad, contact the local newspaper and find out the cost of various size ads. You can raise money for your ads by asking everyone who wants their name in the ad to donate a small amount like $5 to help pay for the ad. Churches and community events are great places to collect signatures for this important venture. For many Right to Life of Michigan affiliates, the signature ads are used as a fund raiser for crisis pregnancy centers or other important affiliate educational work.

Dr. Charles (Bud) Vear, president of Right to Life of Hillsdale County, has had great success with signature ads. They've been doing a signature ad in the Hillsdale Daily News for "about 20 years." Their ad for Mother's Day, 2001, was a 2-page spread with the names of 650 couples and families. Dr. Vear describes his group's annual signature ad as a "simple project that is a good way to get the local churches involved."

Right to Life of Hillsdale County usually distributes return addressed envelopes with sheets of paper to churches that are interested and then lets the pastors decide how they want to inform their congregations about the ad. Some church leaders mention it from the pulpit while others put a note in the bulletin. Congregation members then write how they want their name to appear and mail their names along with their donation to Right to Life of Hillsdale County.

Right to Life of Michigan also suggests using signature ads on Mother's Day and Father's Day to show support for parents that choose life and to thank parents for giving the gift of life. RLM also has ad slicks available for Mother's Day and Father's Day, with samples below, which feature charming pictures of newborns with their mothers and fathers. For assistance planning a signature ad, call the Marketing, Events and Sales department at the State Central Office, (616) 532-2300.
