Looking ahead Election 2002
As the race for Governor of Michigan gets under way, pro-abortion
forces have already started their push to recapture the gubernatorial
office for their side. On September 6, 2001, EMILY's List officially
endorsed Michigan's Attorney General Jennifer Granholm.
Some have questioned Granholm's position on life issues. What may
have been unclear in the past has now been brought into sharp focus.
Jennifer Granholm, who is seeking the Democrat Party nomination
for Governor, has adopted a proabortion position.
Granholm recently stated to the media, "I am prochoice"
(Detroit News, July 15, 2001). The same article quoted others seeking
the Democrat nomination for Governor as saying Granholm may be "squishy" on choice. Unfortunately for prolifers, Michigan Attorney General
Jennifer Granholm is far from squishy on abortion.
EMILY's List, the extreme pro-abortion group based in Washington
D.C., has announced its endorsement of Jennifer Granholm. Granholm's
response, "I have always believed in a woman's right to choose
and am so proud of this endorsement and what it stands for" (Lansing State Journal, September 7, 2001).
What does EMILY's List stand for? What does it take to be endorsed
by EMILY's List? An extreme pro-abortion stand with no exceptions.
According to EMILY's List President Ellen Malcolm, "EMILY's
List is committed to preserving a woman's right to choose, and to
electing senators, governors, and representatives who will fight
to uphold that right . . . EMILY's List will not set aside principle
for claims of possible political risk."
Pro-abortion women in the past endorsed by EMILY's List have been
dropped because their pro-abortion stand wasn't quite strong enough.
According to a 1994 news article, "A national pro-choice women's
organization (EMILY's List) that pumped money into U.S. Rep. Karen
Thurman's 1992 campaign has dropped its support for her because
she backed restrictions on the use of federal Medicaid money to
pay for abortions."
The National Journal reported in September of 1994, "Wyoming
Secretary of State and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Kathy
Karpan also is bitter that EMILY's List and other women's groups
aren't supporting her because of her position on abortion. Karpan
said that she favors abortion rights, but not unequivocally. Karpan
said, I flunk the litmus test because I do not believe in
government-funded abortion on demand and I do not believe in including
abortion in any health care reform.'"
EMILY's List also reported in December 1999 that two senators,
endorsed by EMILY's List, who voted to ban partial-birth abortions,
voted contrary to EMILY's List choice criteria. It was also noted
that both senators no longer meet EMILY's List criteria and will
no longer be eligible for EMILY's List support.
To be endorsed by EMILY's List requires a complete pro-abortion
stand, abortion on demand, including partial birth abortions, and
abortions paid with tax dollars.
While Granholm uses the code word "prochoice," her endorsement
by EMILY's List demonstrates what we all know: in reality, prochoice
= proabortion; prochoice = no protection for the innocent unborn.
