Where do U.S. Senate Candidates Spencer Abraham and Debbie Stabenow Stand on the Abortion Issue?

Spencer Abraham

Partial-Birth Abortion
U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham is an original co-sponsor of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban. He played an active role in the partial-birth abortion ban debate, convincing other U.S. Senators to follow his lead in passing the ban.

Parental Consent for Minors Seeking Abortions
U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham was the lead sponsor for the Child Custody Protection Act. This legislation would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across a state line for an abortion if this circumvents a state law requiring parental or judicial involvement in the minor's abortion decision. This bill protects the effectiveness of the parental involvement laws in more than 20 states including Michigan.

Federal Funding of Abortion
U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham co-sponsored legislation which would restrict foreign assistance to organizations which perform or actively promote abortions. He consistently opposes using tax dollars to pay for abortions.

Voting Record on End of Life Issues
U.S. Senator Spencer Abraham was an original co-sponsor of the Lethal Drug Abuse Prevention Act which seeks to clarify the federal law to prohibit the dispensing or distribution of controlled substances for the purpose of causing, or assisting in causing, the suicide, euthanasia, or mercy killing of any individual.

Debbie Stabenow

Partial-Birth Abortion
As a member of Congress, Debbie Stabenow has shown the full extent of her radical proabortion position. Voting four times against federal bills to ban partial-birth abortion, she defends the gruesome killing of a live child more born than unborn.

Parental Consent for Minors Seeking Abortions
Stabenow also put abortion above parents’ rights when she voted against a bill that would require parental consent before a minor could obtain an abortion.

Then-governor Blanchard vetoed that bill. Prolife citizens mounted a petition drive to place the law before the Legislature. When the petition-initiated law came back to the Legislature, Stabenow voted again for secret teen abortions and against parental involvement.

Federal Funding of Abortion
Debbie Stabenow has voted to spend U.S. tax dollars for United Nations population programs that fund coercive abortion policies in China and for tax funded abortions in the United States.

Voting Record on End of Life Issues
During Debbie Stabenow’s Michigan Senate tenure, she voted against laws that would have stopped Jack Kevorkian long before he helped to kill 137 people. Stabenow was a supporter of the ill-fated 1998
Proposal B campaign to legalize assisted suicide in Michigan.
