The Future of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton

There are nine justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. Only three of those serving in 2005 would likely vote to overturn Roe and Doe. The President nominates new justices, but they must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The questions and answers below highlight key information regarding the possibility of a judicial nomination for the U.S. Supreme Court and the reality of preparing for Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton being overturned.

Question: Why should Roe vs. Wade and Doe vs. Bolton be overturned?

Answer: To return the issue to the American people. The American people are troubled by abortion. Our national abortion policy is too extreme. Laci & Conner Peterson’s tragedy, partial birth abortion, cloning and 4D ultrasounds of unborn children have revived the question of where the unborn child fits in the human family.

Question: Won’t women turn to illegal abortions if Roe and Doe are overturned? – And die trying to get a safe abortion?

Answer: When Roe and Doe are overturned, abortion will not automatically become illegal. In most states, abortion will still be legal. The people will decide on what type of law to have. In Michigan, unborn children will be legally protected and that is why it is important to provide safe alternatives to abortion for a woman facing an untimely pregnancy. We already have more than 100 pregnancy care centers and provide outreach to women with a toll free number, 1-800-57 WOMAN.

Question: Why don’t you just convince women not to have abortions instead of getting so worried about making abortion illegal? Or appointing the “right” judge to the U.S. Supreme Court?

Answer: As long as abortion is legal, it sends the message that abortion is moral and right. The court’s abortion decisions place our government’s stamp of approval on the violence of abortion, the taking of an innocent human life. We need to find life-affirming solutions to the problems that push a woman toward abortion. Legal abortion has led to making abortion so easy and acceptable that our repeat abortion rate is now more than 50 percent with some women having two, three or more abortions.
