“Lame duck session” will feature prolife bills

Two key prolife legislative initiatives will be the focus of lobbying activity at the State Capitol during the post-election “lame duck” session. The Born Alive Infant Protection Act will place new legal requirements on abortionists to provide medical care to babies who survive a late-term abortion attempt.

When these tenacious little ones defy the deadly effort to kill them and are delivered alive, they are usually hidden away and cruelly left to die alone. This five-bill package, H.B. 5994-98, has already passed overwhelmingly in the Michigan House and is pending in the Senate.

A second bill is designed to protect women considering abortion from the coercive pressures of the abortion industry. Under Michigan law, women must receive certain written information about abortion at least 24 hours before the surgery. Some abortionists have been using that waiting period as an excuse to demand that a “down payment” be made in order to secure an abortion appointment.

H.B 5971 will prohibit abortionists from collecting any money during the 24-hour period. Women are already pressured enough to abort their unborn children. We cannot allow this sort of financial coercion to continue. H.B. 5971 has also cleared the Michigan House and is awaiting action in the Senate.

Prolife citizens can contact their state senator in Lansing and urge support for these two important prolife bills. With only days remaining in the prolife Engler era, it will be critical to have these bills reach the governor for his signature.
