Teaching children life lessons

Life is precious, and teaching children this basic tenet will have impact on generations to come. If we begin to teach them when they are young, they will build self-esteem and learn value. They will be able to build others up and value them for their uniqueness and learn respect at the same time. In the world that we live in today, teaching our children to respect life is a necessity. Teach them how to take a stand when they are young and they will never fall.

Right to Life of Michigan Educational Resource Centers offer a way to assist educators in teaching about life. The Resource Centers have compiled curriculum and activities called Life Chests that are available for all educators. Life Chests may be used in schools, homeschools, Sunday School classes, and day care centers. Life Chests provide themes and concepts that help educators facilitate discussions and activities on life issues. They are age-appropriate and may be used in the public or private education arena.

Life Chests include topics for Kindergarten through Grade 12. Younger children may learn about respect, recognition, and responsibility while older populations can learn about humanity, moral questions, and the impact of society's decision to accept abortion and euthanasia. These topics are made interesting and easy to understand through visual aids, books, videos, and brochures. Each set of curriculum recommends specific materials that can be used in conjunction with lesson plans. These materials can be borrowed from our Resource Centers. Life Chests provide activities for each age group along with appropriate discussion questions.

Life Chests have been used by many educators in many different arenas. Kristina Cyr is a Sunday School teacher who recently used the Life Chest curriculum and materials. She reports that Life Chests are a "really easy way for kids to understand life." She taught her Sunday School students with the curriculum, fetal models, and a poster that shows the pre-natal stages of development. Kristina found that her students responded well to her lesson. They came away with a belief that the "person inside of the womb is just as important as the person outside of the womb."

The lesson that all users of Life Chests have been able to get across to their students is that life is precious. No matter what age one is teaching, it is wonderful to see the children walk out of class with a new respect for life.
