Man on the run

Brett Moon raises money, awareness for Right to Life of Michigan

Brett Moon is definitely a man on the run. For the fourth consecutive year, Moon has run in the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon to raise money for the Right to Life of Michigan Educational Fund and awareness for the need to respect and protect human life from conception to natural death.

“My wife was working with Problem Pregnancy Help in Ann Arbor as a phone counselor at the time, and I wanted to do something tangible to help with prolife work,” said Moon, a Chelsea resident. He and his wife, Nancy, are expecting their fifth child. “I thought of running the marathon and couldn’t think of a better place for the money to go.”

For the Oct. 29, 2006 event, Moon ran a half marathon (13.1 miles), but that didn’t make any difference to his prolife supporters. Each year he has raised more than $1,000 for the RLM Educational Fund and 2006 was no different.

Moon is already gearing up for the 2007 marathon and would like to put together at least one five-person relay team. The running distance for each person in a relay would be just four to seven miles.

“The longest leg is seven miles,” said Moon. “It is not too bad even for people who have not done a lot of training. Even if they feel they need to walk, they can still be part of the team. If we get more than one team together, that would be great.”

The marathon route takes participants over the Ambassador Bridge, back through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel and finishes on the 50-yard-line at Ford Field.

“It is very exciting, and, at the same time, you are raising money to save lives,” said Moon. “Not everyone can be sidewalk counselors – not everyone has that gift. But we can all do something to make a difference for the little ones.”
