We Can Stop Partial Birth Abortion

An exciting opportunity is before us. Working together, we can define legal birth and stop partial birth abortion in Michigan.

The state Constitution allows the people to initiate legislation through a petition. The petition seeks legislation that would define legal birth and the commencement of the legal rights of personhood at the moment when any non-severed portion of a human child is delivered from the mother. This legislation would effectively prohibit partial birth abortion.

The advantage of this approach is that the bill’s language cannot be changed by the Legislature, nor can it be vetoed by the Governor.

In order to propose this bill to the Legislature, 254,206 valid signatures of registered voters must be gathered within 180 days. To guarantee enough valid signatures, Right to Life of Michigan’s goal is to submit at least 325,000.

Once submitted, the Legislature has 40 calendar days to say yes or no. If a simple majority in both the House and Senate approves the bill, it becomes law without the Governor’s signature. The law would become effective ninety days after the end of the legislative session. If the Legislature votes no or fails to vote, the issue will be placed before the people as a referendum.

Standing Together To Oppose Partial-birth-abortion (STTOP) is convinced this plan is obtainable, and that we can actually see the Legal Birth Definition Act passed by the Legislature in 2004. However, to make this important opportunity a reality, your help is needed.
