The People’s Override petition drive to end partial birth abortion formally begins

The launching of The People’s Override in Michigan has unified people and organizations across the state. The opportunity to outlaw partial birth abortions in Michigan by collecting the signatures of registered voters has motivated thousands to become involved in this historic, life-saving work.

January 15, 2004, marked the official kick-off of The People’s Override. A press conference in Lansing brought more than 100 prolife people and reporters to the State Capitol Rotunda. Organizational leaders, state representatives and state senators joined Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing to show support for the citizens’ petition to pass the Legal Birth Definition Act. The message was clear. “There are certain things that just ought not be, and partial birth abortion is one of them. No matter how long it takes, no matter how many legislative or court battles, we will protect partially born children in Michigan. And we will do so with or without the support of this governor,” Listing said.

Many leaders of statewide organizations joining with STTOP (Standing Together To Oppose Partial-birth-abortion) spoke on behalf of the petition drive.
