Abortion: A leading cause of death in Michigan
Each year the Michigan Department of Community Health keeps records
of the deaths of Michigan citizens and how these individuals died.
Statistics released on November 21, 2001, show that in 2000, 86,988
Michigan residents died. These statistics, however, fail to include
the 26,807 Michigan children who lost their lives to abortion
in 2000.
Even though prolife citizens have worked hard through education
and legislation to decrease the number of abortions in Michigan,
abortion is tragically still one of the leading causes of death
throughout the state.
The number of abortions in Michigan have decreased 45.4 percent
since 1987, yet abortion still ranks second only to heart disease
(27,474) as Michigan's leading killer. Abortion deaths outnumbered
deaths from every kind of cancer combined (19,764), from strokes
(5,789), from all accidents (unintentional injuries) (3,243),
and from murder (749), among others.
Abortion is not, as the pro-abortion community would have us
believe, a rare occurrence. If the number of lives ended through
abortion is added to the number of non-abortion deaths then we
find that 113,795 unique human beings from Michigan lost their
lives in 2000. Of these individuals, 23.6 percent died before
they could be held and before they could be loved and love others.
Abortion is not a rare occurrence by any means, it's an epidemic
that has spread throughout the United States. Because of this,
Right to Life of Michigan will continue its strong efforts to
offer assistance to women and families in need. When allowed,
unplanned pregnancies can result in unplanned joy.
