26th State Senate Special Primary Election
RLM Political Action Committee endorses Valde Garcia
The Right to Life of Michigan Political Action Committee (RLM-PAC)
has endorsed current Republican state representative Valde Garcia
in the 26th state senate special primary election to be held on
February 27, 2001. The 26th state senate district encompasses
three counties: Clinton, Shiawassee and Livingston.
The 26th state senate seat became open when the former prolife
occupant, Mike Rogers, won the 8th Congressional District seat
in the 2000 election. Congressman Rogers had won re-election to
the four-year state senate seat in 1998. The special election
will fill the remaining two-year portion of Rogers term,
and the winner will have to stand for re-election in 2002.
As in any Michigan primary election, voters must choose to vote
in one partys primary, and the RLM-PAC is urging voters
to choose the Republican primary and cast their prolife vote for
Valde Garcia. The winner of the primary will then go on to the
general election on March 20.
As this issue of the News goes to press, there are five candidates
vying for the Republican Party nomination. Undoubtedly, more than
one is prolife, but herein lies the problem for prolifers.
One of Rep. Garcias main opponents in the Republican primary
is state representative Judie Scranton, a radical pro-abortion
supporter. Scranton approves of tax-funded abortions, opposes
informed consent and also supports the gruesome partial birth
abortion procedure which kills live babies just seconds and inches
from birth.
Judie Scranton is a strong, viable pro-abortion candidate, having
won her 66th state rep district twice by a significant margin.
She has high name recognition in the area and is one of the top
Republican contenders.
With the chance that more than one candidate in the race is prolife,
the real possibility exists of the prolife candidates splitting
the prolife vote and allowing the pro-abortion candidate to win.
That would be a tragedy for the unborn and the prolife movement
in Michigan. It would mean one less prolife vote in the Michigan
state senate, a legislative body far smaller than the state house
and one in which every single vote is important.
The RLM Political Action Committee looked very closely at the
major candidates in the 26th state senate race. Interviews were
held and the local PAC subcommittee voted unanimously to recommend
Valde Garcia for endorsement in an attempt to unite the prolife
vote behind the strongest prolife candidate. Regardless of your
party affiliation, if you are a prolife voter, the RLM-PAC is
asking you to unite behind one prolife candidate and cast your
vote in the Republican Party primary for Valde Garcia. To do otherwise
would risk a split prolife vote and allow radical pro-abortion
supporter Judie Scranton to claim victory.
Since the 26th state senate district is heavily Republican, the
prevailing wisdom is that the winner of the Republican primary
on February 27 will be the eventual winner in this district. Therefore,
it is vital that prolife voters go to the polls on February 27,
choose the Republican primary, and vote for Valde Garcia in a
united effort to blunt the pro-abortion agenda. This is no time
for apathy as we stand together to maintain a prolife majority
in the Michigan state senate. Keep the 26th state senate seat
in prolife hands by voting for Valde Garcia on February 27.
Other Special Elections Held in Michigan
Two other special primary elections are being contested on February
27: the 33rd state house seat in Macomb County and the 2nd state
senate seat in Wayne County. No endorsements had been made in
these races prior to this issue of the RLM News going to press.
If you are interested in knowing if the RLM-PAC has made an endorsement
