Speaking out for life
RLM oratory contestant victorious at National
Being a voice for the unborn doesn't come easy for everyone,
but for one Michigan teen the gift for speaking out was rewarded
with a first-place title! In June, Katrina Jackson, a recent graduate
of Saginaw's Community Baptist Christian School, represented the
state of Michigan at National Right to Life's Oratory Contest in
Charlotte, North Carolina.
Katrina won first place in both the local Saginaw Right to Life
and the Right to Life of Michigan Educational Fund Oratory contests.
With two wins under her belt, she moved on to represent RLM at the
national level.
Katrina gave a powerful and moving speech,"Take my Hand, Not
my Life," on abortion, to take home the first place prize at
National Right to Life's Oratory Contest. Katrina received a check
for $1,000 and a plaque. This is the third time that an RLM oratory
representative has won first place at the National Right to Life
contest. Katrina was surprised when her name was announced as the
winner. She sees her first place finish as an honor considering
the high level of talent in the competition.
"Throughout the competition, I felt a certain calmness because
I knew that my friends and family were praying for me," Katrina
said.
Katrina, who will be attending Maranatha Baptist Bible College in
the fall, had a great experience at the National RTL Convention.
She was able to meet 24 contestants who traveled from all across
America to share their prolife views. Since she finished first in
the National Oratory Contest, Katrina had the honor of gracing the
National RTL Convention Banquet attendees with her speech.
Katrina first entered the Right to Life Michigan Education Fund
Oratory Contest while she was in the 10th grade. Her involvement
with the prolife movement has been enhanced and guided by her father,
mother, and teachers.
