Prolifers Set Record to Protect ChildrenThe people of Michigan override Granholm's veto by collecting nearly half a million signatures Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing submitted 460,034 signatures to the Elections Division of the Michigan Secretary of State’s office on April 15. The People’s Override petition drive initiates legislation to outlaw partial birth abortions in Michigan, protecting children who are partially born. “It will be the people who ultimately override Governor Jennifer Granholm’s veto of the Legal Birth Definition Act,” Listing said. The Legal Birth Definition Act, if not vetoed by Gov. Granholm, would have outlawed partial birth abortions in Michigan. Listing said, “The People’s Override is in response to the outpouring of concern for children who are in the process of being born. The results of The People’s Override in just three short months show where the people of Michigan stand. We want children to be protected.” Thousands of prolife volunteers gathered signatures to outlaw partial birth abortion setting a new state record for an all volunteer group collecting petitions. Listing said, “I want to thank the prolife people of Michigan. Thank you for your fortitude and for being defenders of truth and life.” After the signatures are verified by the Elections Division of the Michigan Secretary of State’s office, the Michigan Board of Canvassers will give their approval and will present the legislation to the Michigan House and Senate. When the petition language is approved by the legislature, it will become law and cannot be vetoed by Governor Granholm. In addition, the language will not have to appear on the ballot for a public vote. |
