National Prolife T-Shirt Day
On April 28, 2003, Rock For Life, a group dedicated to offering
the truth about life issues to Americas youth, will be sponsoring
the first annual National Prolife T-shirt Day. It
is an effort to have the voice of Americas prolife youth
be heard and an opportunity to inform students that they have
a constitutional right to wear prolife clothing.
Rock For Life wants to see every prolife student exercise their
right to free speech. This National Prolife T-Shirt Day is an attempt to make students aware that the Constitution guarantees
them the right to wear such T-Shirts and even hand out prolife
brochures every day of the year. As the Supreme Court stated in
Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, 393
U.S. 503, 5066 (1969),
School officials do not possess absolute authority over
their students. Students in school as well as out of school are
persons under our Constitution...They [students] may
not be confined to the expression of those sentiments that are
officially approved. In the absence of a specific showing of constitutionally
valid reasons to regulate their speech, students are entitled
to freedom of expression of their views.
According to the Thomas More Center for Law and Justice, this
court case goes on to explain that students are protected in every
setting from the classroom to the cafeteria to the playing field
when exercising their freedom of speech so long as they do not
disrupt the educational process. Even though this ruling is clear,
many school administrators have threatened to punish students
who refused to remove or turn their prolife clothing inside out.
In every case, the administration later apologized and allowed
the student to wear their clothing after being shown their mistake.
Be a prolife leader and use the designated day, April 28, as
a starting point for letting your schools student population
know about the lies and horrors of abortion. Show your school
and town what you believe in. If you are choosing to participate
in National Prolife T-Shirt Day, let Right to Life of Michigan
know via e-mail with your name, age, town, state, school, and
e-mail address.
