Michigan’s Abortions
Decrease in 2007 to the Lowest Number on Record
According to statistics released today from the Michigan Department of
Community Health, the number of abortions performed in Michigan decreased
in 2007. The report from the Michigan Department of Community Health states
that 24,683 abortions were performed in Michigan during 2007 compared
to 25,636 Michigan abortions in 2006, a drop of 3.7 percent or
953 abortions . Since 1987, there has been a 49.7 percent decrease
in the number of abortions performed in Michigan annually. Abortions in
Michigan have decreased three of the last four years and the total from
2007 represents the lowest number of reported abortions in Michigan
since reporting began in 1979.
Right to Life of Michigan President Barbara Listing said, “We are extremely
grateful for the large decrease in abortions in Michigan. The fact that
fewer women are having abortions in Michigan demonstrates more and more
women are coming to the realization that abortion is not the answer to
an unplanned pregnancy.”
Right to Life of Michigan is thankful for Michigan’s prolife legislators
who have worked with dedication to pass many prolife laws such as parental
consent and informed consent. These laws, along with others, have helped
dramatically decrease the number of abortions in our state. Michigan is
now experiencing half the abortions of 20 years ago. Right to Life of
Michigan is also hopeful and confident the Ultrasound Viewing Option law,
enacted in 2006 to give women considering an abortion the option of viewing
a live image of their child on ultrasound, will help to continue this
positive trend.
Listing said, “We will continue to reach out to women in need so that
they know abortion is not their only option. There are far too many women
who enter an abortion clinic thinking this is the only choice. Thinking
abortion is your only choice is equivalent to having no choice at all.
There are more than 100 pregnancy centers in Michigan which can help women
find real and life-affirming options for themselves and their children,
and our toll-free 1-800-57WOMAN number is designed to connect women to
these essential resources.”
Right to Life of Michigan is a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, nonprofit organization
of diverse and caring people united to peacefully protect the precious
gift of human life from fertilization to natural death.
