“Vida Preciosa”
Several well-known prolife Hispanic individuals headlined the evening. Bishop Daniel E. Flores, Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Detroit overseeing the Office of Hispanic Affairs, was the special guest speaker. “Radio Unidos” international personality Gustavo Potes was master of ceremonies. Professional artist Doris Perez wrote and performed an original song, “Vida Preciosa,” specially for the event. Bishop Flores, the first Latino bishop to be installed in the Archdiocese of Detroit, delivered a powerful prolife message of hope to a room full of people eagerly awaiting his words. Moving effortlessly between Spanish and English, his speech brought comfort and inspiration to Detroit’s prolife community following the November 4th elections. While still in the early months of planning the event, Honorary Chair David Olivencia suggested that an invitation be made to a professional artist to create a prolife song for benefit dinners. David suggested professional songwriter, singer and Honorary Committee member Doris Perez, of whom he remarked, “She sings like an angel.” A year earlier, Doris had the opportunity to see RLM’s educational PowerPoint presentation called “¡Para Que Sepamos!” (“So We Can Know”) and was greatly impacted by all that she learned in such a short time. “I couldn’t stop thinking about what you showed me about abortion in the Hispanic community,“ she told RLM Director of Minority Outreach Kathy Crombie. Doris said she saw the invitation to write and sing a new prolife song as an answer to prayer and God’s will in her life. Doris worked on the project over many months. She debuted the song live at the benefit dinner, in Spanish and English, to a very thankful and passionately prolife audience. The second annual “Vida Preciosa” Benefit Dinner is planned for November 2009. If you would like to receive information about this event, please email your request to HispanicOutreach@rtl.org. To purchase a copy of the “Vida Preciosa” CD in Spanish and English, please go to www.rtl.org or call (248) 553-8800. Because Doris wants to make a difference within the Hispanic community, please know that she donates 40 percent of all proceeds from the sale of the CD to support RLM’s Hispanic outreach efforts.
