Elections have consequences

Our elected officials have great authority in our lives. They create laws which we must follow or face punishment. This is an awesome responsibility which shouldn’t be taken lightly. Unfortunately, many individuals believe that if something is legal, it is therefore “a right.” When our elected leaders turn their backs on the first and most basic of all rights, the right to life, it shouldn’t be a surprise when some individuals embrace abortion as a “right.”

In the past, our government has failed to secure the right to life for children in the womb. In the 2008 election, voters elected as President a man whose public record reflects a support of abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.

Now, our government not only fails to secure the right to life equally for all, it actively supports violating it. Consider the following consequences since the 2008 election:

Congress passed a health care reform plan that will allow tax dollars to support insurance plans that cover abortions. It failed to include restrictions on funding abortion in Community Health Centers and other federal programs.

President Obama issued an executive order that allows tax dollars to support research that requires the destruction of live human embryos.

President Obama rescinded the prolife Mexico City Policy. Organizations that perform and promote abortion in other countries are now eligible for U.S. foreign aid funds.

Taxpayer funding has been restored to the United Nations Population Fund. The funding was originally canceled when it was discovered that the agency was involved in China’s “One-Child Policy,” which relies heavily upon coerced abortions.

President Obama weakened protections for health care workers who object to participating in procedures that violate their conscience, including abortion. Congress also failed to provide adequate conscience protection in health care reform for health care workers.

Many issues are of deep concern to voters in the upcoming elections beginning with the very important August 3 primary. No issue, however, is of greater importance than the right to life.
